Watch: How to make leaf mould from your fallen leaves

As the Autumn leaves begin to fall it’s time to start making leaf mould.  You might first ask what is leaf mould?  Well, leaf mould is made up of rotted down deciduous leaves which makes a rich natural compost. This compost can be used as a soil conditioner or mulch. Basically, you get good quality compost for free!

Not only is leaf mould free it’s also really simple to make.  All you’ll need is a good supply of leaves, a bin liner, a sprinkling of water and some patience.  Sit back and watch this video from @MikeTheGardener showing you just how to go about it.

Don’t forget that it is important to clear leaves from your borders.  If you let the leaves form a covering over your borders it will make it hard for plants to grow through the leaf barrier.  Also, slugs and snails love to hide out in the leaf cover and before you know it they will have munched all your tender plants.  Added to this a layer of leaves can be a breeding ground for pest and diseases too.
