Paving over Britain, especially front gardens, is a critical issue. And an issue that we know people care about! 60% of people in the UK worry about paved front gardens and flooding. And 61% say paved over streets sadden them. Plus, 90% of people say they are happier when looking at gardens.
Our aim is to show how easy and beneficial it is to get involved. From pulling up a paving stone to plant, through to creating a herb-filled window box. No matter how big or small the act – everyone can get involved and help to Green Grey Britain!
Benefits of Greening Grey Britain
Gardens play a crucial role in urban and suburban areas. And will potentially become even more important in the future as our climate changes. From helping protect us against flooding and extremes of temperature, to supporting wildlife and helping gardeners to be healthy.
Gardens can provide an amazing range of benefits, including:
- Improved air cooling. Making it more bearable in towns and cities in hot weather.
- Insulation of buildings by garden vegetation.
- Improved air quality.
- Storm water mitigation which helps to reduce garden flooding.
- A source of habitats for wildlife.
- Improved physical and mental health and wellbeing for people who garden and enjoy the green space.
How Can I Help?
Greening towns and cities might sound like a grand idea that gets undertaken by your local authority. But, in fact, it is easy to take simple steps in your own garden.
From planting a wall shrub to growing a few more plants for wildlife. It can really make a difference. Whilst you may only own a small garden, if lots of people do something, the results will really add up.
Four easy ways to green up your garden:
- Plant climbers and wall shrubs
- Grow plants for wildlife
- Use permeable paving
- Plant a tree
